Howard C. Cutler

'I answered that from my point of view, the highest happiness is when one reaches the stage of Liberation, at which there is no more suffering. That's genuine, lasting happiness. True happiness relates more to the mind and heart. Happiness that depends mainly on physical pleasure is unstable; one day it's there, the next day it may not be.'

On the surface, it seemed like a fairly obvious observation; of course, happiness and pleasure were two different things. And yet, we human beings are often quite adept at confusing the two. Not long after I returned home, during a therapy session with a patient, I was to have a concrete demonstration of just how powerful that simple realization can be.

Heather was a young single professional working as a counselor in the Phoenix area. Although she enjoyed her job working with troubled youth, for some time she had become increasingly dissatisfied with living in the Phoenix area. She often complained about the growing population, the traffic, and the oppressive heat in the summer. She had been offered a job in a beautiful small town in the mountains. In fact, she had visited that town many times and had always dreamed of moving there. It was perfect. The only problem was the fact that the job she was offered involved an adult clientele. For weeks, she had been struggling with the decision of whether to accept the new job. She just couldn't make up her mind. She tried making up a list of pros and cons, but the list was annoyingly even

She explained, 'I know I wouldn't enjoy the work as much as my job here, but that would be more than compensated for by the pure pleasure of living in that town! I really love it there. Just being there makes me feel good. And I'm so sick of the heat here. I just don't know what to do.'

Her mention of the term 'pleasure' reminded me of the Dalai Lama's words, and, probing a bit, I asked, 'Do you think that moving there would bring you greater happiness or greater pleasure?'

She paused for a moment, uncertain what to make of the question. Finally, she answered, 'I don't know. You know, I think it would bring me more pleasure than happiness . . . Ultimately, I don't think I'd really be happy working with that clientele. I really do get a lot of satisfaction working with the kids at my job . . .'

Simply reframing her dilemma in terms of, 'Will it bring me happiness? seemed to provide a certain clarity. Suddenly, it became much easier to make her decision. She decided to remain in Phoenix. Of course, she still complained about the summer heat. But having made the conscious decision to remain there on the basis of what she felt would ultimately make her happier somehow made the heat more bearable.

邓丽君 ~ 爱人

http://www.stsky.com/Words/20603.htm

If someone throws you the ball, you don't have to catch it

Extract from "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff
...and it's all small stuff"

89. If someone throws you the ball, you don't have to catch it

Often our inner struggles come from our tendency to jump on board someone else's problem; someone throws you a concern and you assume you must catch it, and respond. For example, suppose you're really busy when a friend calls in a frantic tone and says, "My mother is driving me crazy. What should I do?" Rather than saying, "I'm really sorry but I don't know what to suggest," you automatically catch the ball and try to solve the problem. Then later, you feel stressed or resentful that you are behind schedule and that everyone seems to be making demands on you. It's easy to lose sight of your willing participation in the dramas of your own life.

Remembering that you don't have to catch the ball is a very effective way to reduce the stress in your life.

This doesn't mean you never catch the ball, only that it's your choice to do so. Neither does this mean that you don't care about your friend, or that you are crass or unhelpful. Developing a more tranquil outlook on life requires that we know our own limits and that we take responsibility for our part in the process. Most of us get balls thrown at us many times each day — at work, from our children, friends, neighbors, salespeople, even strangers. If I caught all the balls thrown in my direction, I would certainly go crazy — and I suspect that you would too! The key is to know when we're catching another ball so that we won't feel victimized, resentful, or overwhelmed.

The same idea applies to being insulted or criticized. When someone throws an idea or comment in your direction, you can catch it and feel hurt, or you can drop it and go on with your day.

The idea of "not catching the ball" simply because it's thrown to you is a powerful tool to explore. I hope you'll experiment with this one.

Inner Game

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
~ John Wooden

Post-Valentine

Would you rather receive candy or flowers on Valentines Day?

Definitely flowers! (A combo would be cool too! My lover can feed me candies...)

Though the only flowers I received yesterday (and ingested) were cauliflowers :(

I just answered this Featured Question; you can answer it too!

One of my very rare personal entries on this blog here:

Drats! Woke up at 5am (4am++ to be exact) and wasn't able to get back to sleep properly afterwards. Was blogging on my other xanga blog. I had to say I'm gonna take back my words... I find my other blog a good ranting avenue for my randoms and what-nots... 2 blogs kinda like yin and yang, black and white thingy ya noe? It doesn't consist of all only sad stuff.. it has its witty moments, misleading ques, even perhaps kinky, flirtatious bites (roarrrr and purrrrr). All the stuff that typically acquaintances or even most friends wouldn't know of me normally. There's a tiny link amongst one of the last 5 posts that will lead you there (big enough hint already).

Predators who will use these info? Nah... I'm not too worried about that. Besides, my other blog doesn't have a rss feed. And what you read may not be what you get off me anyway. I figure if one actually does bother to read what I do blog over the other account, one would be truly interested in me as a person enough (or my articles at least). And if you're not truly interested in me nor do we click in terms of frequency, it'll show in your demeanour soon enough. Nuff said.

So I tried getting back to sleep after updating a few lines on my other blog. I just couldn't. Maybe I was sleeping too near that wee wee boy pink lamp. So at 6am I got up again and boiled some water for strawberry black tea. As of now, the water's been boiled (heard that click sound from the kettle afar) but just yet to get round to making tea cos I'm still blogging here.

The humidity is getting to meh. I'm gonna take a shower again soon, within 8 hours of my last steamy shower...

Home
Jiraiya-sama to Naruto:

They say a place where someone still thinks of you,
that's a place you can call home.

Hmm... reminds me of a song by 潘美辰 ~ 我想有个家...
